Rise Montessory Nursery

British Sign Language (BSL)

Earlier in 2023 the nursery took the decision to include the teaching of British Sign language into our curriculum.

Teaching British Sign Language (BSL) to young children aged 9 months to 4 years at nursery can have several significant benefits. Implementing such a program, especially from such a tender age, can have lasting positive impacts not just on the children but also on their families and the broader community. Here are some of the benefits:

Early Communication: Babies have the desire and capability to communicate long before they can speak. Using BSL can give them a tool to express their needs, emotions, and observations, reducing frustration and tantrums caused by the inability to communicate.

Cognitive Development: Studies suggest that bilingualism or the ability to communicate in more than one mode or language can boost cognitive development. This includes better problem-solving skills, creativity, and memory.

Enhanced Literacy Skills: BSL can help children understand the concept of language earlier on. This foundation can translate to better reading and writing skills later in life.

Social-Emotional Benefits: Using BSL can promote empathy and understanding as children can better express their emotions and understand the emotions of others. This can foster better relationships and social interactions.

Inclusivity: Introducing BSL at a young age can foster an inclusive environment where children grow up with a positive attitude towards the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. This can break down barriers and reduce prejudice.

Enhanced Multitasking Abilities: Managing two languages or modes of communication can help children become better at multitasking as they grow older.

Cultural Awareness: Teaching BSL also means introducing children to the rich culture and history of the deaf community, broadening their horizons and teaching them to value diversity.

Long-term Benefits: Even if the child does not continue using BSL as they grow older, the early exposure can make it easier for them to pick up other languages in the future.

Parent-Child Bonding: Parents who learn BSL alongside their children can use it as a bonding tool, creating a unique and intimate form of communication.

Economic and Career Advantages: In the long run, individuals fluent in BSL can have an advantage in the job market, especially in sectors like education, health, and social work, where the ability to communicate in sign language can be invaluable.

The program started in September 2023 with our Baby room staff receiving training. This will be rolled out in the year 2023/24 to include the Toddler and Preschool classes as well. We are very excited to bring this fresh approach to holistic education to the children at Rise!
